88 Town Car has some of the front grill blocked off? Looks factory.....Why?

See my photos, the top section of the front grill on my 88 Town Car is blocked off, looks like it was definitely OEM, why would they do this? I did not eyeball measuring and it appears air through this section would reach the radiator? I'm always looking for better cooling where I live....

I think there was a thing about the radiator being too much in colder climates so that was used to help the car stay warm in the winter.

My 88 and 90 Fords both have something similar. Figured it was an aerodynamics thing. No factual clue, however.

If it's for cold climates it's gone, if it's aero, might leave it. I think it might be aero, just like air dam prevents so much air from going under the car and creating turbulence and lift hitting all the suspension , oil pan etc... But for my needs might just ax it to get better cooling for my future plans....

If it is not creating any negative issues, I'd just leave it alone.

The flap is to aid in proper air direction to help cool the a/c and radiator. Similar to having the proper fan shroud.
