    Dear Panthers,
My CP is outside in the weather & our dirt road is salted.
Five years ago it cost me $2000 for paint (no clear coat), removal of wood grain and fairly minor dings at the best body shop in Staunton Virginia. I've been back twice, once for minor deer damage (insurance) once for rust, dings & weather stripping ($800) and I'm going back this month for more rust and more weather stripping -5 -600?.

My body shop guy told me that if he was to paint the whole car - no dings, no rust, no vinyl removal, he'd have to charge $2500 today. Good paint has got expensive. He's very good, isn't making a killing and so long as I keep this car, that's (part of) the price for having a reliable long distance driver.

I put 15 K on my wagon in 2006. I've spent about $2000 on it this year and I'll spend that much again in 2007. Plans this year: I'll be driving from Va to Ct, Il,Wisc, ND. Ma, Nc, SC and Ga. I will travel fast, safely, reliably and comfortably at 23 mpg with my MP3's playing through the car stereo, guided by my GPS with 4 full sized sheepdogs in the wayback.

What kind of a car could I buy for payments of $166 a month?

Even a decent job on my wagon will be about 7K...

Do most of it yourself, get some experience... Or spend less $$ and time and find a cleaner wagon to mod.

A gallon of middle range paint, runs about $450 with reducer and clear coat. That mixes out to 2 gallons.

Mang... You can do body work youself... All of it.. Do like Scott Said.. Get a decent dander, and a Air compressor... Hell i Saw a Write up on how to make your owen Air Compressor By Scott Gadget, and Epi..

Buy you some paint.. I had a link for auto paint kits for like 200 bucks.. which included evrything you needed and sum.. So im sure you can find it..

Any ways.. Sand that fucker down to the bare meteal.. PRIME it.. Hell prime it agine if you want..

Fig if you want to learn to do some welding.. Hire a welder whatever.. Or. Use Bondo shit.. Do that... Then Paint...

If your doors or panels are far beyond repair of bondo, or welding... Or you just dont fill like fing with it... Go to the yard find another wagg. Take them parts and put on yours...

:-? Im preety sure all of it is bolted on..

Anyways. The compressor is for a air brush.. If the compresor dosent have Water seporator on it. Go buy one. Be sure ure Air brush's PSI is up to par with your air compressor as well....

Last but not least.. Paint it..

Exterior is easy mang.. Interior is a bicth...

You dont need to take the car down to bare metal before you prime. Also using an airbrush would take forever to paint a car lol I suggest using a paint gun.

Hey mang you got it backwards. Its supposed to be..... interior is easy, exterior is a bitch.

You really can do alot of bodywork yourself tho, just take your sweet ass time and dont cheap out if you dont want it to look like shit.

Find a dead compressor somewhere, or buy one. They do sell tanks specifically designed for high pressure air use. You need a fair amount of CFM to run a DA sander. A basic cheapo compressor is never going to keep up.

Yea, I took mine to Maaco, they fucked up. Paint in a few spots ran... now the paint is peeling in areas.

Certain Maaco's do a good job, others don't. For example, the one I took my Vic to, I did their paint job right under the top of the line one. Paint ran and is peeling in spots. Took my Beretta to a different place, and had the Industrial ($300) bottom of the line paint job done, and it turned out amazing. Even looks better than the Vic did when I got it back. So I'd research where you take it to first.

So here's the options I'd go with. Do your own body work, then get the Industrial job done...

OR... just rattle can that thing flat black, make it a monster!!
