I would personally keep the original tails. I am biased as my 86 has the same ones. The 79-82 tails have smaller lenses, which I'm assuming puts out less light, and the black part always looked like a cheap filler piece to me.Your originals have more lines in them, which I personally like, plus it has classic look that can be seen in some of the newest Mercury designs (Mariner, Monterey, ect). The 88-91 tails are fine, but are made smoother to go along with the redesigned/smoother look those cars have.

I'm a fan of the originals, but the others aren't bad if you want to be different. With the early grille, then most people won't be able to tell your car is an '84 instead of an earlier model.
