    Removing your vinyl top

Here I plan to detail the process of removing a vinyl top, and document everything as I go.

I'd like to make sure I have all the things necessary before starting, so if you can think of anything to add to the list, please do. Here's what I'm pretty sure I'll need:

    - Adheasive Remover

    - Sander + Sandpaper

    - Grinder

    - Fiberglass Body Filler

    - Primer

I'll probably stop by Lowe's on Sunday morning as I get off work and pick up the adheasive remover. I have an air grinder already (cheap-o from Wal Mart). I'll need to pick up some body filler as well, and I'm hoping to borrow a sander.

I know the rear window trim will come off with prying with a screwdriver, is there anything else I need to know? I'm going to leave the metal trim on the roof for a while, until I'm able to have a friend weld it properly. The vinyl will come off with that trim in place, correct?

Anyway, please post comments or questions here. Feel free to sticky this, or not. I'll update it as soon as I have something to update.

LOL, The top comes off like a helmet. Pull the head liner and rear side pannels if I remember and begin unbolting some are i believe blue plastic thumb screws of a sort. Have fun.

I didn't know that. I thought it was just vinyl glued over the metal.

he's talking about a coach roof.........your gm's top is glued to the roof, but you still have to remove the headliner to get the trim off the roof

Okay, that's what I thought. The vinyl can come off with the trim in place though, right?

You have to remove the trim to get the vinyl off, but you probably could put the trim back on after you took it all off too.

It was too long ago to remember my procedure, but I can tell you two things. I never took out my headliner to remove the top-the headliner is still in place I think I might have used an air powered cutting wheel on the rivets for the trim.
The adhesive removers I tried sucked, all they did was create a gooey sticky mess I found that a window type razorblade scraper was the best way-although it does take a lot of elbow grease.

What are you planning on doing about the fiberglass filler piece that extends out on top and has the glass in it?

That's only on the coach roof cars.

My 89 has that. I am curious about this because I would not mind removing mine, too.
