pre-'86 smog pump upgrade/isolation

most people would want to run the AC without the smog pump, but my backwards thinking self needs to run the smog pump without AC! :coocoo:

The AC was a lost cuase, and I like the reduced look under the hood - but I need the pump for emissions. I also like a clean fender well, and the smog divertor valves are the major eyesore on the fender.

So heres some info on the chance that some one :coocoo: like me might find it usefull.

To do what Ive done, you'll need these parts:
(some parts may not apply, depending on what you want to get out of this)

a) smog valves from the newer MPFI setup - the type that are only held in place by the hoses, not a fender mount. There exist both a combo type (both valves in one unit) but that is still bulky imo. I found this type, with seperate and much smaller valves.




b) 90 degree smog pump outlet neck WITHOUT any vacumm lines or vent nipples

c) tensioner pully bracket from the newer models... the difference is this bracket does NOT also attach to the AC compressor. You dont have to use this if you dont mind a big AC bracket leftover, and can allways be changed later.

d) ribbed tensioner pulley
In order for a shorter belt to work, the ribs of the belt will have to run on the smooth pulley. Not too sure how this will work... we'll see!

e) MPFI smog air injection manifold
I have the divertor valve test-fit installed using my CFI-style air tube, and I got it to clear everything halfway decnt. The old smog hoses have some sharp turns so re-cycling those back into it is helpful. If Im not happy with it once i but the rest of it in, I might go with this part.

All A/C brackets are thrown out, the big square plate is pretty much cut in half, the pulley is repositioned so that the end of its lever attaches to the long bolt holding the airpump, for the small bolt that clamps it into place you mill a new channel. And that's not the stock TC pulley, but a 6-rib one from some early-80s Cougar - the flat one is okay, but the belt will wear out much faster. The Cougar pulley also has a shorter lever, but it works out pretty well.

So you used just the front plate with nothing behind it? I would be worried about the thing flexing being made out of aluminum and all, but I guess since you make it a lot smaller and moved the pulley in some it moves the stress from the belt tension in closer to the bolts... good thinkin!

I think I can visualize everything you did pretty well... by 'mill a new cannel' do you mean to make a new slide area for the tensioner pulley to swing? Thats the only thing I think I couldnt do... I dont have metal working tools, but Id like to mimmick that setup one day !

I notice you still have the striaght outlet on the air pump, did you re-plumb it with newer style hoses and valves?

Pete, I'll try to take some better pics in a bit, these were made in the evening anyways so the flash doesn't help too much.

Yes, I have nothing behind the plate, but I'm not worried about it since when bolted down the pulley's lever basically doubles it's thickness. Wouldn't do it with the stock setup, but if you flip the pulley it's good.

The milling part you got right too, it's just a new curved channel for the clamp bolt - if you have no acces to a milling machine, just drill a bunch of holes right next to each other and file down the walls between them, done it like this before and it works pretty well. If you want I can make you a plate like that, and USPS it to you - I got no extra plate though, so I'll have to pull you one from the junkyard. I'll also need to know what idler pulley you're gonna use, the Cougar one I found works great (except for being noisy as hell), but I have no clue whatsoever which year exactly the donor car was - tried looking up online to see if I get a match, no luck at all I still have my stock pulley somewhere on the balcony, so if that's what you're gonna run I'll just use its geometry - let me know if you're interested, you pay only the price of the plate and the shipping, work is freebie (ain't too much work anyhow).

As for the pump's outlet - my original pump actually had a vac-line attached to it, it feeds air into the cruise control system - go figure, everything works perfectly without it. The pump you see in the pic came from a '84 Grand Marquis, and is currently under employed (works for the sake of working) - we don't have emissions control here in Michigan, so all the plumbing is deleted, I even redid the vac lines so I retain the EGR but ditch all the extra lines I don't need. There will be a pic of that too.

Though it looks like you could use some custom made doormat splash flaps for your inner fenders like mine

I was a dumbass for cutting mine out, now I gotta get new stuff for it, still got the compressor and the Condenser, gotta get a new evaporator though.
