There is also the idle control dashpot thing. Does that plunger come in contact with the throttle lever? I'm not sure how they're supposed to be set, but I think the dashpot plunger is supposed to just touch the throttle lever, and the dashpot controls the idle or something.86 Lincoln Town Car (Galactica).

Some cars just act funky for no special reason I swear. My friend had a 77 Cordoba with a 400 and a Thermoquad. It was formerly a leanburn car but it had been converted to standard carb/ignition. No matter what we did with it, it would backfire when you'd go to take off in the morning. It could idle for a half hour and be totally warmed up, but as soon as you pulled out of the driveway and went to leave, it would stumble and miss till he put his foot down and let it belch. Once it did that, the thing ran like a clock. Just the nature of the beast.86 Lincoln Town Car (Galactica).

mine will sometimes stall out once and only once when i first start her up for the day.
Does it sound like its idling too low before it stalls? If so Id raise the idle back up a little and check the VOTM as Gadget mentioned.

my white CV would act like a loss of power when it was first driven. it had a rattle sound in the cats on the driver side. till one day i floored it and made it pop whatever was in ther out. somethin blocked the cats up and broke loose. i have noticed that a car will stall if it cant breathe, drink, or exhale. a person can check the air filter, and see if its getting fuel, but you can never tell if it is the cats that are blocked. i just got done ramming my tire iron thru them so taht it can exhale easier. all that will change once some shorties are installed and dual exhaust dumping out a harmonious 5.0 growl.

Doesn't CFI have a choke-like assembly that raises the idle speed during warmup? If that's not functioning, it could cause stalling from having effectively a lean condition before the engine's warm ... but of course, that would only happen when the engine's cold. The throttle dashpot thing is supposed to extend when you're accelerating and then to let it idle back down more smoothly when you get off the gas. Supposed to be pretty critical with CFI and some carbs, but the one that was on my '79 didn't work at all and it didn't seem to matter. I'm just glad my Edelbrock four-barrels don't need that sort of junk and the electric choke assembly takes care of everything!2012 Mazda5 Touring | Finally working on the LTD again!

It only happens when it's warmed up. I noticed the temp gauge was running a bit high this morning, but have to make sure the gauge is hooked up correctly, I moved it to my new center console and think I missed the center ground.
I adjusted the VOTM up last night and no stall today, but it is much cooler today.2000 Grand Marquis LS

So, it's happening again. I have checked the Dashpot that controls idle and it seems like at certain times it either is getting a signal that the engine is idleing too fast and slows it down too far or it has a leak maybe. What sensors control that? When it started stalling this morning I shut it off and restarted,no problems at all. If it was a leak it would be all the time I would think.
Someone wrote an article about a solenoid being wired to bump up the idle 300 rpm or something, maybe that solenoid is bad?

you can test the VOTM by applying/removing vacuum to it and seeing if it moves - you can test the TKICK solenoid (controlls the votm, is the only round solenoid on the valve cover) by giving it your own power and ground.
These two work together to manually bump the idle up a little when the AC is on and during cold starts, and is supposed to any other time the engine bogs down.
As mentioned in the article, I just hot wired mine to a switch so that now I controll when the thing activatesPete ::::>>> resident LED addict and CFI defector LED bulb replacements
