Some are 2 channel, some are 4. The EVTM for my 86 shows only the 4 channel. When I got it, the front speakers did not work because the amplifier was unplugged. I plugged it in and found out why, the amp was toast. Rear speakers worked just fine, driven straight off the radio. Odd that its not in the manual as an option, but its what my car came with.

Yeah, even the black/silver box amps are crap. When I first got my TC it was all stock, stereo sounded like dog doo. Then I swapped in the JBL amp and that was a wonderful difference but the knock your socks off effect came when I replaced the deck with an aftermarket one. Now it's running an aftermarket JBL amp with JBL power series speakers in the doors, rear deck and sub. I'm pretty happy with it.

Only holds true if its not all broken when you got the car
Fixing some of it involved replacing it with the upgraded option stuff.
