    Door/Ignition/Light Chime

So my 89 has never had a door chime sound. So I tested the other day, peeked under the dash and listened. You can faintly hear it. OK - so chime is there but barely audible.

So I got another chime, from my 87 and swapped it over. Wouldn't you know it - same thing - just a faint, wisper of the chime. My 87, that I plugged the 89s into, was its loud normal self. So no module problem. Something else is going on.

My question is where do I start with diagnosis on this? Cause I'd like to have a chime for when I leave the lights on at least (usually I use autolamp, but daytime rain storms say otherwise).

There's a bit of foam in the module that breaks down over time. Once that breaks down the chime module doesn't make sound very well.

Here's a thread on that topic:

I got confused. Were you saying the known good 87 module does not work right in the 89? Or what?

I'm glad mine never had a chime to begin with, never liked them in most cars.

Lincoln stuff won't interchange with Ford/Merc stuff. VCV gave his spare to Ashley but we found out the connectors aren't the same despite them doing the exact same thing.

I missed that detail, I don't think you're confused Jay.

Did the '87 module work when you put back in the '87?

The issue is car dependent. I swapped modules between the cars and the issue stayed in the 89. The 87 works fine regardless of module installed.

Do you have a dim dome light with the driver door open compared to the other doors? Could be a bad switch and there's not enough power getting to the chime. Or there's a bad power lead to the module in that car.
