    84 Lincoln Defroster

Whenever I hit the defroster switch up to the ON position, it turns on for a few seconds with the light on, and clicks off. I try again, and nothing happens at all.
    Is my switch bad?

Very possible. The switch has a heater in it and a bi-metal spring that makes it work as a timer. If the spring is tired it may not hold properly. They often fail the other way, not shutting off and running the battery flat.

Will the defrost work if you hold the switch up ? If it does, I'd say its a switch problem.

I tried holding up the switch, but the light stays bright for a few seconds and fades out. Does the switch have a built in breaker or anything? Hopefully it isn't a shorted out element.

yes, the switch does have sort of a built in breaker... that's the thermal spring that Gadget was talking about. Yes, your switch is bad. No it's not that hard to replace. It may be harder finding a replacement switch than actually replacing it.

          Would this switch work?

That looks like the right one.

Might want to copy the part number and see if someone else has it for less.

Just checked, that is the cheapest one.
I'll have to order one sometime soon, but getting the car on the road is probably a bigger priority.
