Whenever I hit the defroster switch up to the ON position, it turns on for a few seconds with the light on, and clicks off. I try again, and nothing happens at all.

Very possible. The switch has a heater in it and a bi-metal spring that makes it work as a timer. If the spring is tired it may not hold properly. They often fail the other way, not shutting off and running the battery flat.
Will the defrost work if you hold the switch up ? If it does, I'd say its a switch problem.86 Lincoln Town Car (Galactica).

I tried holding up the switch, but the light stays bright for a few seconds and fades out. Does the switch have a built in breaker or anything? Hopefully it isn't a shorted out element.MyTechtime

yes, the switch does have sort of a built in breaker... that's the thermal spring that Gadget was talking about. Yes, your switch is bad. No it's not that hard to replace. It may be harder finding a replacement switch than actually replacing it.

Just checked, that is the cheapest one.
