    Do you use a rubber?

Knew that would grab your attention!

On mid to late 80's cars, have you kept the rubber boot that surrounds the distributor cap?

When I purchased my '86 Tudor the rubber was missing, and I ordered one from Ford.

I believe it's to keep out dampness?

Haha. You did! I was thinking "Oh god... what could this be about"

Yep, still have the rubber hood on the distributor on my car. Keeping the moisture out is my understanding as well.

So many NYC "mechanics" had had a hand in working on this car I had to replace a sheet pot of stuff when I purchased it from the original owner who was an old woman, yea, I paid way too much for her (the car not the old lady ) but wanted a Tudor as I always had big two door Ford cars.

One example:..........why would a "mechanic" remove and never replace the "spout" connector???

The title reminded me of a comedian who said he didn't like the smell of burning rubber.

Here's something I found on a Jeep forum about rubber distributor covers that makes sense:

"I have head many put the rubber boots over the distributor cap.... When spashed the water flies thru air get cold and lands on the warm cap and engine bay in general. The cold splash water on the exterior of cap causes condensation of the warm air internal... on the inside of cap. Not the best place lots of High Voltage under there. So the Rubber Covers insulate and have air gap under it so that can help with splash... esp in damper climates and conditions......"

I have a couple somewhere. I never could get them to clean up nice, so I didn't put one on.
1990 MGM: $50 E7 heads, HO cam, Holley SysteMAX lower intake, HO upper intake with an Explorer TB. LSC ECM. Lincoln logs into stock dual exhaust. K&N drop in air filter. Wide ratio AOD, 2400 converter with a 3.08 one tire fire out back. Car is less slow now. Then there's the '92 Beater. Dual 2.25" exhaust with shiny tips. Rumbles nice. Super slow. Burns oil too.

I heard the opposite, its keeps moisture in. If water and moisture can get in, and believe me, it will, you would want a way out. I took mines out

because someone forgot to plug it back in after setting the timing. It probably wasn't on purpose, just nobody cared enough to verify everything was back together correctly.

I don't honestly remember if i have one on the Towncar or not. I know I have one for it, but I wouldn't swear if its installed. I don't think the Mark VII has one. I try to not open the hood of the car often, so I don't remember whats under there. If I turn the key and it goes, then there is no reason to poke at it further.

Meh, you could debate both sides...

I don't have them mostly because any time I've thought about it about and went to put one on, it always put the cinch on my usually neatly spaced out plug wires. So, I'd pretty much have had to take all the wire clip things loose and re-shuffle them a bit (aka laziness...lol)

I've still got mine. Never had a problem with trapped moisture, but certainly see the signs of water drops having found the cover.

The distributor condom is still in use on my '87. No matter how much I clean it, though, it still looks like shit.
