HELP – coolant leak above manifold

got the heater core successfully replaced (finally) and afterward even added some pinstripes for good measure!

my wife came home yesterday though and said that somebody flagged her down at the grocery store to tell her the car was leaking coolant bad...

checked it out this evening and not sure exactly what i found: from one of the heater hoses there is a small hose that tees off and goes to the something above the manifold behind the throttle body (then another hose goes from the back side of this part). whatever that part is, it has a leak, dripping down on the manifold.

too dark for pix tonight -- does anybody know what this is? was really hoping it was just a hose...

    thanks in advance.

Just to give you something to think about until someone more knowledgeable chimes in, I've seen some posts along the lines of there being a coolant line that goes to the EGR valve and that it can be bypassed. Does that make sense?

EGR cooler... disconnect the long line from the hose and put it on the nipple on the lower intake that the other line goes to. You may have to trim off the clamped area to get to good rubber or just replace the whole length with new (probably better). Then, if you want, take a section of hose and seal off the ports on the EGR cooler. The EGR cooler isn't needed.

Stupid question but does it do anything? Why would Ford put it in if it didn't actually do anything?

helps warm up in deep cold. that's about it. doesn't really cool much. actually warms the air. some have a 10 degree drop in cold air coming in during warm months.

I've been running without it for years and have never had issues. It might be good for a CH of fuel economy if you get the air less dense due to higher heat levels, but you'd really have to work at it to measure that I think.
