    Trunk Release stopped working

Hey folks! I was in the car again today (85 Crown Vic) and I noticed that the trunk release button in my glove box has stopped working. I haven't had time to check stuff yet other than the obvious (the wire leading into the button is on there pretty good). Any suggestions on the best way to troubleshoot this?

    Cheers

Will it still open with the key?

Check the wires on the driver side hinge of the trunk lid, the power wire for the actuator is in there (at least on a 91) and they can get pinched and severed.
Also if the actuator is loose it can stop working since it is grounded thorough the metal of the deck lid.

Yeah the trunk opens fine with the key. It's really not a big deal, just alarming when something that worked fine a week or two ago doesn't anymore!

I'll have a peak re: the actuator.

      Thanks

pull the plug off the solenoid and hook up a test light or meter. Have someone press the button. if you get power to the wire when the button is pushed with the key on, all the electrical stuff is fine. The solenoid is likely stuck or just dead. You'll have to remove it to troubleshoot further. If no light, go back to the button itself. One side of the button should have +12v, the other side should have +12v when pressed. If it has power in and no power out, its the button. If no power in, you'll have to go back further. No idea what fuse that runs from, but check that.

"Key on" was the kicker here. Basically it works fine, I'm just a moron and forgot that the electrics had to be on for the popper to work. It's not needed for the gas door, which is probably why it slipped my mind.

Sorry to waste everyone's time. Thanks for the responses.

At least it's one less thing to worry about.

No worries! When something works correctly, without you having to fix it - that's a big win!!!

Understatement of the century. I had the same "problem" when I first had my '89. It's a box panther thing, haha. Wouldn't be surprised if there was a way to make the power trunk popper button work without the electrics on. In other words, make it like the headlights that you can turn on or off whenver you want.

You should be able to just run voltage to the "popper" wire to pop the trunk. When I locked my keys in the trunk of my '82 Deville, I ran power from the battery to the pop wire and it popped the trunk open. I would assume our cars would work the same way. Personally, I like that the setup requires the key in the on position. That way if someone breaks into the car, there's less of a chance they'll rob my trunk as well.

That said, if you really wanted to you could attach to any old always hot wire and run that for the wire on the switch and you should be able to get a trunk pop as long as there's juice left in the battery.

FWIW, the trunk button in my 2000 Grand Marquis is on the driver's door and does not require the key to be on. One of the benefits is that I can use the keypad to get in the door and then pop the trunk without bothering to grab my key.
