    Why no wire inside??

    This past Monday I replaced the radiator in my '86 Tudor MGM..............I also replaced the upper and lower hoses...........I noticed that the new lower hose did not have the spiral wire inside of it like all bottom hoses I have seen over the yrs..........I put it on the car, but will I have a problem?

    I've never seen one on these cars with a wire. It doesn't seem to need it. I think the pump is just wussy enough that it can't suck the hose flat or something. Fox body cars don't have it either.

      IIRC, the lower hose on my '90 has the wire inside. Not sure if it's the original hose or not. I don't ever remember changing it. Maybe I should check it out.
      1990 MGM: $50 E7 heads, HO cam, Holley SysteMAX lower intake, HO upper intake with an Explorer TB. LSC ECM. Lincoln logs into stock dual exhaust. K&N drop in air filter. Wide ratio AOD, 2400 converter with a 3.08 one tire fire out back. Car is less slow now. Then there's the '92 Beater. Dual 2.25" exhaust with shiny tips. Rumbles nice. Super slow. Burns oil too.

        The bottom hose I tossed out had a wire in it, but it was not the original FoMoCo hose, rather Gates replacement. I think as you said those pumps that were Ho-Po outputs tended to cause that hose to collopse, hence the wire. If I find an actual FoMoCo hose I will put it in if it does have the wire.......guess I am too anal

          My factory hose on a 351W (heavy duty/iron water pump) had a wire. But then the replacement, name brand, didn't, so who knows. I put the old wire in the new hose because why the heck not.

            my 88 sucked it flat once... but that's because I needed to burp the system and left the rad cap on. horrible noise that. turned it off... pulled the cap, topped it up, put the cap back, cranked it back up and popped the cap off and topped it up the rest of the way with everything flowing. Cap back on and filled to the hot mark on the reservoir and shut it down to let it finish itself off as it cooled off.

              Haven't seen a wire inside a rad hose in years. Not sure even OEM does it.

                I have not seen the wire in the lower hose since the early 90s. I do remember the thick flex hoses that were used aftermarket in the 70's. You were not suppose to mix the flex hose with the molded hose. It was either flex hoses on both top and bottom or molded.
                Maybe that is why the molded hoses had the wire installed, to prevent collapse. when people mixed the two types of hoses.

                  I'm sure it comes down to the quality of the hose. I have not had a bottom spring in years in any vehicle. That said, the 'made in malasia' lower hose (don't buy any more hoses at PartSource.They used to have goodyear and dayco, now its prestone rebranded hoses) I put on my truck this past weekend has a spring in it. I'm going to guess becuase the hose does not have the built-in reinfocement.
