would a voltage regulator shitting the bed also cause the alt to not charge back the battery? if thats a possibility i'll try that first as i can get one for like $20 bux

Yes that will cause that. A lot of the time that is the problem.

mine has one sitting fat dumb and happy on the drivers side lol. and its a 91. could be because mines a p72

Its prolly the same big frame alternator that came on boxes with heated windshields... for all the police goodies
Swapping the regulator is worth a shot... Once its running I would change that anyway so you might as well.
