yup... lots of threads about that around here. Like I said on the other board, start-up draw is a bitch on the Mark VIII fan. An in-line power cap will help with that or a variable speed fan controller (kinda spendy).

Fuck that fan. Get a dual fan from a 99 v6 contour. Less power draw even on high, and it flows better than the mark viii fan. Had a mark viii fan in my grand marquis, it moved air but every time it turned on the car almost died.

I want to try to swap in a mid 90's areo electric fan, the kind that mounts to the fan shroud for the dual fan setups. I noticed one day that the top center nub bolts to the shroud in a flat spot that looks awfully similar to the weird random flat spot/notch found top center on some box fan shrouds.
One of three almost-correct mounting spots is a huge head start from none when it comes to that sort of thing.
I can't remember if the '90 Townie shroud has the notch though...

Sounds like you have a stock alternator. If you go from a dead stop to high speed it will spike anywhere from 80 to 100 amps.

I wound up harvesting some funky electric plug-in-line contraption that works with a MK8 fan... I wonder if it's some kind of 'soft turn-on' module???

Sounds like a pulse width modulation (PWM) controller.

I thought about using an e-fan from a Chrysler minivan since they're plentiful in the junkyard around here. Every once in a while they'll have a VIII and some older tore-asses but not often or when I go there.

Wrong, I have the 130 amp Taurus alternator in both of my vehicles. Even from a dead stop to high on the contour fans, my Grand Marquis, which would die when the a/c came on (single speed Mark 8 Fan) high speed on contour wired for a/c. The headlights barely even dim.

Can get the assembly new from rockauto for 100 bucks. Just need the wiring. Even comes with the speed resistor in the shroud!

speaking of this... anyone know where to get the C-clips for the wiring that hold the harnesses together on the cougar/contour/mystique?
