    Heater Core hoses

    Doing the core.....saw the sticky.
While I am at it...I want to take care of the hoses....looked at RockAuto and am confused as there are many choices...

For a 1988 Towny with ATC.
Anyone got part numbers or links for the hoses/lines that should be done in conjunction with this clusterfook?

Not sure about the Town Car, but for my Grand Marquis it was easier to get the hoses at O'Reilly's.

There should be 2 or 3 plan on changing them all. I bought the Goodyear ones off Rockauto

I just go to the local parts store to make sure I get the right shape or just use bulk hose for the long runs.

When I get home this evening I can double check the hoses on my car and make corrections if I find any of this to be incorrect.
With ATC, I believe this is what you need:

On RockAuto under 88 town car >> Heat & AC >> Heater Hose:
2 hoses for the inlet side of the core. "Heater to Valve", and "Valve to Engine". If it was non ATC these two hoses would be one long hose because it would not have the TBL valve.
1 hose for the outlet side of the core, "Heater to Pipe", it connects to a pipe that runs under the upper intake.

While you're replacing hoses, it wouldn't hurt to replace the hoses at the water pump also.
You'll find both under Cooling System >> Bypass Hose
Should be the "bypass" hose and the "Pipe to Engine" hose (which I believe actually connects from pipe to water pump, or "Tube to Water Pump" as the Motorcraft part says).
"Pipe to Engine" hose is actually listed under both "Cooling System >> Bypass Hose" and "Heat & AC >> Heater Hose" categories on RockAuto under 88 TC.

I once went to AZ and took the hose I needed off in the parking lot, I had some rags to clean up coolant, and that's how I made sure I was getting the right shape.

When searching the forums, I thought I read about getting some insulation to wrap it somewhere?

the heater core itself should have some foam rubber around it that should come off pretty easy once you get to it. I've never heard about wrapping the hoses, and unless the stock core padding is screwed up somehow, it's a non-issue.

My gasket was glued on, I used a flat head screwdriver to break the glue and peal the gasket off. I split the top of the gasket and just slowly worked my way all around. On one side the glue wasn't really sticking. Once I got it off, I left the thin foam on the new core and I can hardly tell that it's under the old gasket.

+1 on that, although I suppose it would keep the heat in by keeping the coolant from cooling in the heater hoses?

I would vote for installing the non-ATC hoses and eliminating that stupid thermal switch. They're usually bad by now, and if its not i wouldn't expect it to survive being disturbed. Jumper the wires, plug the vacuum lines, forget it was ever there.

When I did the hoses on my 90 Grand Marquis I just ordered any hose that had a different description, one of each. I wound up with a few "backup" hoses as a result lol.

I was gonna buy MOTORCRAFT Part # YG238 the one located in the heater hose...is that the switch you were referring to Gadget?

They call it a Heater Control Valve)

Yep, that's the one he's talking about. I took that out and jumpered the wires like gadget said, and in place of that switch I put an inline filter. So far I'm not so sure about the filter, I think it may be restricting flow too much. I have some more troubleshooting to do before I actually make a thumbs up or thumbs down call on the filter.

jump the wires... plug the vacuum lines... have a nice day.

I have half a mind ti run the vacuum lines to a vacuum switch as it would give me a forced recirculate switch. Better cooling in the summer.
