So I had this thought yesterday while at work... Knowing my A/C currently doesn't blow cold, and I didn't really mind not having it last summer, I think I want to remove the unit all together. I figure that should free up a little power as well... Is there anyone else who has done this, and would know the best place to pick up the belt I would need after removing the A/C?

A side note, also...I'll notice when it's cold out, there will be a bit of a rough, squealy noise coming from under the hood...I'm almost positive it the A/C unit, as it's still turning, even though I never use it. Once the engine is warmed up though, it doesn't make the noise anymore. I don't think it could be anything else, as the engine only has 37k miles on it...I just fear it might possibly be something worse. (water pump?) What do you guys think? -
that's probably the smog pump (directly below the AC). If you can remove both (check your emissions laws first) that may be preferable as it would completely eliminate that belt. Just plug/remove the hoses going to it.
Not sure what size belt to use for the AC delete to keep the smog pump going though.

The squealy noise might be coming from the air cond. clutch.
But it also could be the idler pulley starting to go bad.
If you're going to pull the air cond. might as well remove the air pump too. If you can get away with doing that.
But since you're in NY, that might be a problem. I agree with checking the law first.Comment

Thanks for the advice guys. I'll definitely look into NY Emissions to see what's up...I've got enough time to wait, since it's still too cold here (and snowing again today) to really do much mechanical work on her. I'm hoping in the next month or so, it will atleast be in the 40s, to where I can start doing something, haha.Comment

I'm assuming it's a 91? Technically removing any emissions related equipment is against the federal law, but no one cars. 25 years and older get a safety only inspection in NY, so you have a a few years to wait if you want it to legally pass without the smog pump. Just cut the belt off for now. You can take it out if you feel like it but just hacking the belt off will eliminate the smog pump and the a/c.sigpic

I like this idea the best. This way, technically the car still has the smog pump on it...haha. Well, the belt is off, delete is complete, now to enjoy all the extra horsepower!! Lol, not really...but inspection wise, I know I'll be fine, and it was definitely worth it to not have to hear that squealing on cold/wet mornings.
