Flasher unit . . here, there, everywhere, WTF?!?!?

Ok, simple enough, all the bulbs are good, but my turn signals no longer blink. Both left and right are affected. Hazards work just fine.

Well, look right here, just remove that panel, and ta-daa! Two flashers right in easy view and reach. Clearly ONE of them must be for the turn signals, and the other for the hazards, right?

    WRONG!

Turn on the hazards, and try to disconnect one, they still blink. So, obviously that must be for the turn signals. Disconnect the SECOND one... and the hazards STILL blink... uhhh, what??

Both flashers disconnected, and the hazards still blink, and I can hear the light clicking sound SOMEWHERE!!!

Further, I head to Autozone, system lists a flasher number, clerk and I go look at it, and it's got two prongs. The flashers I can see right now on the car each have three prongs.

So, am I looking at the wrong thing? Where are the turn signal and hazard flashers actually located? And are they supposed to be 2-prong or 3-prong? What about the two that are right there as soon as I removed that padded underdash panel - what are they for?

Anyone have a part number? Ideally I'd like the one with the louder clicking.....

On the back of the fuse panel there may be another flasher unit.

you're looking at the ditch light relays I bet. Those look like flashers, and are mounted to a tab on the bottom of the steering column. The turn and hazard flashers are in the fuse box. One is on the back. I want to say the one on the back is the turn signal, and the easy to access one is the hazard flasher but I may have that mixed up. I just remember cussing getting that one out of the back on my car, and I've never had hazard problems with it.

The one in front is for the turn signals.
1990 MGM: $50 E7 heads, HO cam, Holley SysteMAX lower intake, HO upper intake with an Explorer TB. LSC ECM. Lincoln logs into stock dual exhaust. K&N drop in air filter. Wide ratio AOD, 2400 converter with a 3.08 one tire fire out back. Car is less slow now. Then there's the '92 Beater. Dual 2.25" exhaust with shiny tips. Rumbles nice. Super slow. Burns oil too.

My 86 model has it on the back side of the fuse panel.

I second that you are looking at the ditch light relays as you only removed the padded underdash panel. The relays you are looking for are in the fuse box. Remove the panel directly underneath the steering column and you will find your prizes.

In 89 turn flasher is definitely the one on the front. You can replace them with modern electronic units, I did and it works fine. I would not again as the electronic units will flash even if a bulb is out.

The old mechanical style are bulb count specific, so if a bulb goes out that side stops flashing automatically and you know a bulb is out and which side it is on.

And "front" = the flasher you see facing you, not the flasher at the 'front' of the fuse box as it relates to car position. =-)
