    Check oil light

I was surprised to have my check oil light working on my 1989 LTC and was wondering at ho wmany quarts does this light come on? When you're a quart low???

I know my year car has an inconcsistent oil dipstick (5 quarts = waaaaaaay above the crosshatched area)

mine comes on at 2 quarts low. Some come on at only 1 quart low. others as much as 3 low. My dipstick dead on correct on my car... 5 quarts are full of win.

      mine is 1 quart low.

Re-mark the dipstick so you know whats correct. Change the oil, put in 4 quarts and start the engine. Shut it off, and make a mark on the back side of the dipstick. This will be 1 quart low. Add another quart, mark that. That will be full. Anywhere between those marks is fine, below the lower mark needs oil.

Yeah, I will do that when I change my oil, just need to find a level road.

Is it bad if im driving with two quarts low in oil? (that is assuming I am two quarts low

On a normal dipstick, 5 quarts mean that you are just above the crosshatched marks or by the lettering??

5 quarts if the stick is properly marked is usually right at the top of the crosshatch, give or take maybe 1/4".

2 quarts low is not ideal, but as long as the red oil light doesn't come on, you're probably not hurting anything. If the red light is on, you have no oil being pumped and thats bad.

no, the oil light is for lack of pressure (oil REALLY LOW and not moving). The oil light on the Lincolns is the same as the red Engine light of death on the CV/GM.

You stop making oil pressure about 3 quarts low typically, but it might drop out randomly on turns or whatever at 2-2.5 quarts low. Flat level ground it will usually pump but it might suck air. Air is a terrible lubricant, and will not do good things for your engine internals. Basically any more than 1 quart low is not recommended.
