    Battery suggestion for my 86 town car

    Just what the title says... The battery I have now seems small to me, when I'm running the defrost/ heat I notice my turn signal slows down when I'm at a light... When I give more gas it speeds up.... I figure the batter doesn't have enought juice? Thoughts... Suggestions.... I have a Willard battery in my 98 grand marquis and that's a huge batt...

    It's the shitty fire hazard 2g alternator. Upgrade to a 3g and embrace the idle amps.

        The 86 battery tray is smaller. You can change it to one from an 87+ and fit a bigger battery, but the alternator is the real problem.

          So no alternator is ready for bolt on ill have to alter a 3G one...

            You can buy bolt on replacement 2g's but the 3G is a direct bolt on too depending on what car you get it from/for. They sell wiring kits too if you don't want to do that yourself. The 3G is just better so it makes no sense to buy a new 2g.

              So what would be the direct bolt on replacement and wiring so that I'm not making holes bigger and all that stuff?

                That one I dunno. If anyone knows which models used the fatter bolts on the 3G, we can probably get a mod to add that info to the sticky.

                  shouldn't need to make any holes bigger. you just use a nut and bolt on the top instead of the bolt like the stock setup. Or you find the appropriate tap and drill for it, and tap the 3g top ear to accept the stock bolt, whatever size that happens to be.

                    Matt told me the same thing, but my 85 has the same battery tray as all my other cars.

                      You'll need at least an alternator from a 94 - 95 Mustang with a 5.0. Then Heli-Coil the upper hole. I believe I used a 3/8-18 thread on mine. I did mine back in '09, and never had an issue. My battery is a model 65. It has a 1050 CCA rating. These are the batteries used on E-450 cutaway vans that are used for our busses at work. The old 2G fire bomb was 65 amps, and could not keep up with the simplest task. Forget using the rear defogger. The 3G idles at 70, and has never failed me. My charge cables off the alternator are overkill, but I got them from a wheelchair bus we were junking. Free is good, and having them in the exact length I needed was even better.

                        It might be an 86-specific thing, or maybe an 86 Lincoln thing, but its definitely not the same as others. There are a bunch of wonky one-year parts on the 86.

                            depending on the source of the 3G, the lower bracket bolt may be too fat for the alternator. I had to drill out the one I got off of a 5.0 t-bird. It wasn't an issue for me since I already had the nice carbide bits and it went through like a hot knife through butter.

                              the 2g alternator is garbage mines caught on fire at burger king with just the a/c on and the radio and amp not even running. Upgraded to 3g never been happier!
