    alternator/battery

alternator is not charging. can find nobody to take me to the u pull it to get an alt. (gonna do the upgrade) need to know if a 5.0 box marquis can make it 35 miles to the u pull on just the battery power (battery fully charged) i realize to have everything turned off and it's mostly highway. is it doable? i just spent 2 days asking people for rides out and it's not happening...

I would not try the conversion at the yard. Drop in a 2g so you can get back. Try the conversion at home. You will be carrying cables?

You are sure it is the alternator?

You have to do some rewiring, add a mega fuse, get a different alt belt, maybe drill out "new" alt hole. Lots of stuff to do.

3g is a good idea but I would not want to get stuck with the job not complete.

Do you have access to an extra charged battery you can bring with you?

                  I doubt it.

No. 35 miles is a long drive to make on only battery power. Fuel pump and computer will be a big enough draw as it is. The computer will shut itself down when voltage drops low enough (somewhere between 5 and 8 volts, maybe 9 volts) and you'll be dead in the water. Too many solenoids and relays are active just to drive. Those add up to be a significant draw. Hit some traffic with the brakes on, and your brake lights will drain the system even quicker.

                    Alex.

+1 - Too far of a drive to risk it. PLEASE make other plans!! Bobby

I don't know I think I could've done my conversion in a yard parking lot. I didn't need to drill, used my same belt, and just grabbed an entire mega fuse charge cable from donor car.

But regardless it will be much easier and more quality ( less rushed ) if done at home. And I wouldn't try the drive on just battery power either. And you won't know the pulled alt is good either.

Also depending on your year voltage regulator could be the culprit.
