    Heatstroke Kills

    Dear Panthers,

19 infants so far this year and countless pet dogs. There are cheap solutions that ring your cell phone when interior temps exceed set limits but I'm often off service.

I'm thinking it shouldn't be too hard to wire a thermometer to the car horn. Suggestions?

It might be adaptable to a relay which could then power a horn, not sure if it puts out enough power to trigger a standard auto relay.

It appears to require AC voltage, which wouldn't work on a car's DC supply. There are 12 volt temperature controllers with alarm contacts and adjustable set points. i have one laying around here but I don't think it goes over 80 degrees. I use it as a thermometer in the workshop.

There's an even cheaper solution. Don't leave your kids or dogs in a hot car. Too many stupid people in the world.

In the fine print it takes 12V AC or DC.

Also dogs are more problematic than children in some ways. No one will stop you if you bring your baby in the store to buy some water or almost anything else for that matter. But when I bring my dog some folks freak out. Often he needs to wait in the car, so being really quick and finding shade become priorities. Donald travels the country with his working/show dogs.

Cops with K-9's have an alarm that sts the horn a honking and the windows down, and the fan in back of the car going to cool the K-9.

                  Dear Panthers,

Mr. grandpaslincoln wrote:"There's an even cheaper solution. Don't leave your kids or dogs in a hot car. Too many stupid people in the world."

A couple years ago at a big Kentucky sheepdog trial, a storm loomed on the horizon and, since 3 major weather patterns collide over that region, previous storms have ripped circus sized tents from their moorings.

Everybody ran to their RV's to drop awnings, make sure they weren't under big trees, etc.

Storm soaked everybody for ten minutes then lifted and within minutes temps were back in the 90's.

An hour later, a man turned to his wife and said, "You did open up the van, right?"

He was recovering from a stroke, she was worried about him, each thought the other . . .

They were very experienced dog owners - as experienced as you get. They loved the two dogs who died in their buttoned up vehicle.

I don't think they were stupid or wicked. I think they were unlucky. I drive a white car with tinted windows. I park in the shade with windows down maybe five inches. Push come to shove, I carry a reflective tarp I can bungee cord over the whole car. That said, on a couple occasions I've been lucky.

And what if I collapsed while in the supermarket or was arrested or knocked unconscious or - for any reason couldn't return to the car I'd left outside thinking I'd only be gone five minutes . . .

                    Dear Jay,

I spoke with their tech people who are also doubtful The buzzer is 10 Volts. Will that work and if not can you (anyone) suggest a workaround? Donald

                      Dear Panthers,

I know what needs done but dunno how to do it. I've located an adjustable 12vDC heat alarm whose buzzer gets 10V of current. I'd like to get to one of those beepbeepbeep backup alarms. Thain suggests a relay which is where my ignorance stops me dead. Is there a closed relay which can be opened by 10 volts to operate a 12V alarm?

most automotive relays will trigger with only about 9V even though they are rated 12V. You would probably want to find a 9V relay though. Can be found from most on-line component shops. use that to trigger a 12V relay of your choice in the car.
