What is the black wire running to negative battery terminal?

That would be interesting, considering an 83 doesn't use a TFI module 83 should be EEC3 with a Duraspark box. Its driven off a crankshaft trigger, not a pickup in the distributor. Theres actually not really much of anything in the distributor, just a shaft and a rotor. Make sure the crank trigger is good and the connections are clean or it won't do anything.
I got confused with which cars had which. I only have seven.. Yes you are correct regarding not having a TFi module. Will check crank connections. I do think there also is a electrical wire or connector that is bad. It quits when it feels like. Sometimes it restarts, other times it wont for awhile.
Ah, yeah seven cars can make life confusing. Check the connections at the coil too. I think that uses that goofy plastic push-on collar thing and the button shaped terminals on the coil. If those are not good and clean it will lose spark.
