    88 Towncar oddball firing order?

so after replacing the plugs, wires, rotor and cap i plugged everything back in according to the Haynes manual for an 88 Towny with a 5.0L. first i hooked it up for a HO engine and it wouldnt even fire. but that was my bad because its a lopo, then i found the other one the one i used was listed in the book as being for what i assume was a lopo. (the HO firing order was listed futher down the page) and after starting the car about a minute after warm up it was backfiring and chugging badly. since then i copied the original firing order that was set up on the car (i left all the wires on the original rotor so i copied that) to double check my hookup and found that order i used from the supposed lopo configuration in the book was completely wrong. as far as i can tell. the firing order the car had before we bought it which is how its wired now is not in a manual. what engine do we have in this car!? the plaque on top says

    Ford Ford
    5.0 or 5.0L
    Litre EFI
    EFI

cant rember which. honestly this was the only thing i looked at to see if it was a HO

i should mention the car runs fine now after putting the wires back to how we took them off, im just so confused as to why the firing order is so weird

    This is the problem... lol.

There are only 2 possible firing orders, its safe to say that book is wrong. Throw it away. I've seen more than one Haynes/Chiltons that have a dizzy cap diagram that doesn't have the cap tab in the right place, so you wind up installing them one-off.

Get an OEM Manual - probably tons of them on EBAY Hayes/Chilton's are a joke!!

The firing order is on the emissions label under the hood. Also, you know the distributor runs counter-clockwise right? Chevys run clockwise. I've wired Fords ass-backwards before when I had a brain fart. they do not run like that. Also, its not impossible that some nitwit dropped the distributor wrong, and #1 is not where it belongs. If you just can't get it to run, crank it around to TDC on #1 compression stroke and see where the rotor points. If its not pointing to the #1 spot on the distributor cap, it won't run right either, even if you jockey the wires around to make it match.
