1987 Grand Marquis - Electrical System Acting Funny

Hello - I have a 1987 Grand Marquis named Deana. Just recently, she started acting funny and I'm not very good with electrical stuff. Here's the problem...

It began a few days ago. Sometimes, when turning the ignition switch on the gas gauge, wipers, & turn signals do not work; even if the engine is started. Turning the ignition off & back on solves the issue.

Today it got worse. It happened a couple of times while driving. At first, I though the transmission went out, but it only lasted a few seconds. The gas gauge turned off, some dash lights came on (like they do when turning the ignition on, before starting the engine) and the throttle stopped responding. But the engine kept running. It felt like "the power" was cut off and when "the power" came back on I was pressing down on the gas pedal so the car just took-off.

Does any of this make sense? Help is greatly appreciated!

sounds like the ignition switch is failing. Its a common problem. Remove the two plastic shrouds around the steering column and look on the side near the shift lever. The switch is the only electrical thing on the side. Often you'll find them coming apart. Replacement is just undoing the two security Torx screws and unplugging it. New ones are about 20 bucks. Fix this ASAP, these are known to cause the car to catch on fire.

DONE! The old switch WAS coming apart.

Thanks for the help. I was getting ready to start replacing everything electronic under the hood.

Any advise on what electronic components I should think about replacing before they die?

Switch to a 3G alternator with megafuse. The older alts were fire-hazards too.

+1 upgrade the alternator. the 2G to 3g swap is pretty easy and only requires soldering 2 wires IIRC. The rest is adding wire.

lots of threads on it. There really should be a sticky for just that. I know there's a sticky with the wiring diagrams though.
