Anyway, my '88 Country Squire soldiered on for awhile, my red engine light of death would flicker at stop lights, until I got the thicker 20w50 oil in it. Or if relatively new oil, you could pour a can or two of "engine honey" into it to thicken the oil up. This may not be the end of the car, mang!

I rode my 79 Continental with the red light on solid at idle. The engine knocked and clattered like no tomorrow, but it ran on all 8 and never died. That was on 20/50.

Oil pumps basically don't go bad. Either the pump drive shaft broke because something jammed in the gears, or the bearings are completely wiped out. The bearings don't come on suddenly, it takes years to get that bad. The light will also typically go out above idle speed. A shaft can snap quickly though and that light will not go out. If it hasn't been run with the light on, its possibly fixable with no serious damage but if it was run long enough that things are knocking and banging, put a motor in it. At a minimum, I would pull the distributor out and see if the pump drive shaft is still visible. If you can't see it, or part of it comes out with the distributor, that would pretty much tell the story.
