    ???Heater Core???

Hi guys. I just pulled the dash and all that jazz last night. I came to a grinding halt when I tried to pull the heater core box out. After unbolting the two nuts in the engine bay, it still seems to be firmly planted. Is there some sort of adhesive that I have to cut through to get it free? Or are there more bolts holding it in place? Or perhaps I missed a step?

there's also bolts on the interior side under the insulation at the top edge.

Awesome! Thanks SLYMER I thought that (according to the heater core thread) the insulation was on the outside in the engine bay. I am thinking that the heater core has been done in the past because there are many clips and screws missing in various locations. How long does the typical heater core last?

depends on the condition of the rest of the system. If the rest of the system is clean and working properly... it should last the life of the car. If there's crap floating around or the radiator cap allows the system to over-pressurize, you may be in for more issues sooner than later.

two at the bottom of the air plenum box, just behind the carpet as well.

Do yourself a favor and pressure test it before installing. I went through this once only to find out my new OEM heater core was defective. 15 PSI of air fed into the core while its dunked in a bucket of water will tell you what you need to know.

I gave up looking for the unseen bolts/nuts this morning. It was raining and cold, so I sent the car to the shop. So close, yet too far for my comfort.

5 total sounds right. 3 from the engine side, 2 from the interior side. unless someone had experience with this prospect, i dont know that I'd let them do it. Its not exactly that hard, but its tedious and a lot of disturbing of stuff is involved, along with hours of work. i'd probably go for rebduilding the air plenum door hinges if i was this far into it as well. they are known to fail and to fix it, it involves removing the plenum box from the car. you are currently at the position where the plenum is almost out of the car, so there really isn't any better time to fix that.

Yeah, I'm just going to let the mechanic replace the heater core. I know that I'm going to be paying out the arse for that alone. Driving Putter Project to and from work everyday is hitting my wallet hard too.

i specifically was referring to the mechanic. can't tell you how often I've heard about dash squeaks or broken pieces following a "professional" heater core replacement. There are reasons that so very few people are allowed to work on my vehicles. I'd rather something stay broken than be fixed wrong and cause me more trouble down the road. I've seen cars with holes whacked in the firewall to extract the heater core rather than have it done correctly. Same thing with fuel pump access holes in the trunk, or heater boxes cut open and duct-taped shut to avoid having to unhook something.

Not so much gas money, but time. Though I might consider it next time as the shop just called me and said that the studs are stripped and they have to cut firewall. Whatever! They said that they have done this before. Hopefully it doesn't come back butchered. The dash creaked and squeaked a little from day one, because somebody had the dash apart in the past. They left out screws and broke a few tabs. Hopefully the '86 Country Squire is still in the JY so I can strip it down and collect the various screws and kick panels.
