    Airbag light

The airbag light in my 91 Grand marquis LS is always on when the car is running. Is there anything I could check before I just pull the bulb out? I'm not too concerned that the airbag won't work, but the light is just an annoyance. I haven't got my shop manuals yet so I don't have any schematics to know what could be the issue. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

I take it it's blinking right? Count the number of times it blinks.

2 - All Primary Crash Sensors Disconnected.
3 - Air Bag Deployment Circuit - Low Battery Voltage or Low Backup Power Supply Voltage
4 - Safing Sensor - Diagnostic Circuit Open or Low Primary Crash Sensor Resistance
5 - Air Bag Circuit or Crash Sensor Circuit - Shorted to Ground
6 - Driver-Side Air Bag Circuit - Open or High Resistance
7 - Passenger-Side Air Bag Circuit - Open or High Resistance
8 - Primary Crash Sensor - Not Mounted to Vehicle Properly
9 - Primary Crash Sensor Circuit - Open or High Resistance
10 - Diagnostic Monitor Internal Thermal Fuse - Open Due to Intermittent Short to Ground

Also, note that you can't just pull the bulb to get rid of that annoying light. The Airbag module checks resistance across the Airbag light circuit, and removing the bulb makes it very angry. And by angry it will make the most insufferable beeping know to man.

That is interesting. So, if mine is blinking three times, what is broken, and how do I fix it. (I sure didn't know we had all that high-tech stuff on our old boxes.. cool!)

Mine is not blinking at all. Just constantly on all the time.

3 times means the capacitor thats used for the backup supply is bad, or its unplugged. Find the bomb control unit and about 3" from it will be another box with a small cord connecting to the main bomb control. Thats the backup supply. if its plugged in, then you probably need to replace or rebuild it. Its just a couple of capacitors inside the box, about $15 in parts from digikey or mouser.

beastiezzz: never seen one on constantly. Maybe someone pulled the fuse? don't have a book that covers the 91 grand marq so I know not its bomb circuits.

Thanks Gadget. I'm not sure I'm ready to dive back in to my dash quite yet, though. I'm still healing...

Well I asked the original owner of the car what the airbag light was about and he told me the following. He replaced both the airbag and the clock spring and then after all that about a month after that he said the light went on and this time it was some sort of 'air bag module' that's located on the underside of the passenger side dash. I did some searching around the web and was only able to find a crash sensor. Is that the part that i'm looking for or is that the safety switch in the trunk?

air bag module should be behind the glove box. I dunno if the 91 has the same general idea as the 93/94, but I would think it's similar.

If it is... the module box is probably blue.

I going to take a look when I get back from the first road trip for me and my girl with this car. I'm only taking it about 2 hours away but that's alot further then I've taken it yet so hopefully all goes well. I just did some basic maintenance today along with a tune-up and I'm glad I did. While changing the air filter I saw some oil in the duct that goes to the throttle body. I didn't think that was good so I took the intake hose off of the throttle body to find oil in front of the throttle plate along with alot of other gunk so I cleaned it all out and as much as I could while reaching behind the plate. The throttle response was sluggish before and now its alot better and seems to be happy with some fresh oil in there. Anyway I hoping to have an event free trip along with some relaxation so I'll get back on here when I get back home. Do you think that I should put an oil separator in there to prevent the oil from getting back up into the intake?

nah... replace the PCV valve, grommet, and screen if you haven't already. That will solve that problem.
