AH that's what I forgot...yes the tube. They do make a special tool for that but it doesn't always work... sometimes it can get stuck, or so clogged up that the tool wont even fit in there. But definitely do that if you open the system up, or really I'd do it anyway now that you have the system empty.

Yes there is a tool for that but usually a needle nose (if carefully done) will remove it. Just make sure you match the "colors" and direction (which is marked on the tube).

I remember mine was so filled with dirt/debris you couldn't even see it! However my AC system hadn't been operational for years at the time... Had to dig the tube out of there. Hopefully your's will be in better shape!

If the compressor breaks down dumping metal particles and air gets into the system that tube can be "welded in" with nasty junk.

I haven't retrofitted the hoses and o rings but did do the pressure ports. I had success in the past with just getting the r12 out and using r134a with oil in it that is supposed to be compatible with r12 systems. It comes in a kit with 3 cans. If it leaks afterwards that's ok I won't be too upset.

My shop manual said 52 oz of refrigerant as well but I thought that seemed like a lot soi guess about 40-44 oz of r134a?

Got the vinyl off along with most the glue. I still have to sand down and paint etc.

Apparently someone else had the top off before me because my ripped top was over another ripped up top, and all of the body seams that I see in other posts were already bondoed over.

I used paint and lacquer thinner in an aerosol can (the kind that foams up) on the glue and it worked great, just sprayed it and let it sit for about 15 minutes then the glue and fuzz just fell off. Made my day, I was expecting a lot worse.

Also added two cans of 12 ounce r134a and it was ice cold so I decided to stop adding. Will probably hold more but if it's cold then it's good enough for me
