    Ambient Air Sensor

Quick question, I had an 85' GM that had shitty heat so my brother did a heater core, didn't fix it. So I fumbled under the dash, but my finger over a hole on a blue sensor, and voila, hot smoldering heat, so for the winter, I just stuck a piece of foam in it and called it good.

So I have an 87 GM that has similar issues to this. I flushed the system, still just mediocre heat. I want to take the dash apart and test the sensor but I have a quick question.

Is this sensor in all the Grand Marquis, or just the ones with the auotmatic climate control? My 85GM had Automatic Climate and this one doesn't, and I don't want to dig around the dash looking for something that may not even exist. Gonna check the blend door while I'm in there too. I don't really want to spend the money on a new sensor that is like $80, but if it means hot heat in the shitty Michigan winters, spare no expense.

As far as I am aware - NO ATC NO SENSOR. It is located right under the Dash Pad around the middle of the pad and has a plastic tube running down. NO ATC means you should only have a cable to the Blend Door. Maybe either the cable or door is stuck but others here may have more info.

you most likly have ATC, which is vacume controled. a cheap, easy thing to do, just to get you by is to plug the vac line. if you open the glove box and look on top of the heater box, you will see a goldish color vac servo(round metal can), with a clear vac hose going to it. if you remove the clear hose from the gold can and plug it(i use golf tees, since they came with my car lol), you will have full heat all the time. i did this on my wagon, since its mostly a winter car.

Thought he said his '87 DIDN'T have ATC? Did I misread or simply "mis spoke" (shades of Al Gore, here)?

There's another type of ATC that has temps marked across the temp slider and the usual fan speeds (like in my Mark) and the fans speed reduces from the setting it's on instead of having an auto setting.

Guess we would have to know (maybe a photo?) EXACTLY what he has so we can help.

If the slider is not marked in degrees, and does not have the words Automatic Climate Control, you don't have the sensor. The blend door is controlled by the cable. Its either cold or hot, as long as the cable is hooked up. If the engine is running at the proper temperature and you still have poor heat, the core is probably partially clogged. Just make sure the engine has the right thermostat first. Running a colder or one of those failsafe thermostats can cause the motor to not make enough heat. I know when I had a 180 in my Towncar, the heat was OK, but it was much better when I put the proper 195 stat in there.

Another reason I usually use OEM parts for most of my repairs, especially sensors and the like...
