    speaker size?

What size speakers will fit in the front doors of an '89 again?
6.5", or, does it need to be 5.25? Shallow mount wholly unnecessary in these fat doors, right?
I'm happy to drill new mounting holes. I'm less happy to have to fetch a grinding burr to enlarge the hole in the sheet metal.

    thanks!

6.5. You may have to drill holes for the mounting screws. Shallow mount is unnecessary. the window doesn't reach it IIRC. Always a good idea to look first though.

Im pretty sure either size will work, I put 5 1/4" in my doors in the 85.
I cant say for sure about the window, the 85 has vents so the glass doesn't come down behind the speaker. The 91 has the speaker bezels so clearance isn't an issue. If you can nab the angled speaker bezels from a 90-91 to use, it gets the sound to your face a lot better too

What do you mean by "vents so teh glass doesn't come down behind the speaker"? I just saw somewhere else about "vented doors" and I don't know what it means.

Do component speakers make any sense?
I do not know, however, where to mount the tweeters. I'm lazy (err, efficient, I mean), and do NOT want to mount tweeters on the A-pillar, requiring routing of the crossover wires through the door harness.
Can I just use a little holesaw and mount them at the top of the door panel, taking care to secure the wiring so it doesn't ever run into the window/regulator?

Since this car is going to remain with the factory headunit for some time to come, if it even ever gets a custom headunit/amp, I guess I want the highest sensitivity speakers possible too?

Cars with vent windows dont have glass as big as cars without vent windows.

My 85 TC took 6" direct fit with the angled baffles, in order to mount my 6-1/2" woofers I had to pull the angling-ring-thing and mount them directly on the door, even then I had to bend the metal a little bit to get them seated properly. I have power vent windows and the normal depth woofers are fine. I don't know if the TC is different from yours in other ways.

Don't you have dash speakers? I used components, woofers in the door, tweeters in the dash. Sounds fine.

My 2 cents would be to keep the angled bits if possible. It aims the sound up towards you. The extra 1/2" of speaker size you can gain by deleting the ring doesn't have much effect on sound, but having the speakers firing at your ankles instead of in the vague general direction of your head will.

Wonder if they'll fit the TC? I did notice a lessening of midrange when I installed them flat in the door (increased bass though). I'll have to take a look at the Marks next visit to the JY.
