    Bigger Battery

It's about that time to replace my battery in the Gray Bomber. I want to go bigger (size wise) than original. I don't want to relocate it to the trunk. Has anyone had success in doing that? I see some battery trays and boxes on Summit, but not sure which to get.

It s not always a bigger battery but how porous the lead is in the battery. What ever frame size the heavier batter is in most cases the better one.

I took a dremel and shaved down the little ridge, in the base of the battery case, so I could drop a larger battery in. Works great!

A group 65 will fit right in (you might need a different hold-down) and it will have plenty of power for you.

Sweet...! This will be easier than I thought if all I have to do is change the tie down strap. I really didn't care about the size, but wanted more CCA than 590. Thanks!

So far my stock battery and alternator are doing their job, it helps that i'm not running the a/c belt so the alternator probably charges a little better but so far even in 10 degree weather it starts no problem, cranks a little slow but that's due to the old battery.

What the fuck are you talking about? The A/C belt isn't gonna hinder the alternator's charge. And those damn alternators aren't worth shit anyway. The most they can do is 65amps.

I did the alternator upgrade/conversion in the summer and it's been great! No more dim lights when I slow down to an idle.

This little 8lb battery has like 1350 cranking amps.
A few years back I spent a few days researching batterys found out there are only a few companies that made them here in the US.
Discovered cheeper batteries have more pourous lead plates so the heavier battery in any fram size is the more powerful and longer warinty. Marine batteries possibly the most robust but the shortest warinty. I have 2 of them here purchased 5 or more years ago left out in the cold and not used over that time pulled them out of the boat and started a truck with them. Short warrinty is because of the rough conditions bouncing through waves and such.
The Braile battery in the pic is one of the best batteries you can by. They have std frame modles / weights also. would go for one before an optima and there prices are about the same. Bigger is not necessary just better sometimes.

Something else to be aware of, the 86- takes a different and specific battery. 87+ you can fit a fatter battery in, and they came with that bigger battery in tow package cars. 86 and older got one size battery, which I think is a group 27 or something. The bigger battery I want to say is a 65. You can mess with the battery tray to fit a bigger battery in there, but its not a drop-in.

and for whatever its worth, unless you have something like a snowplow or other really big electrical demand on your car, the stock battery will be fine as long as the charging system is up to the task. The stock alternator is barely enough to run a totally stock car. If you've got a problem with insufficient power, look to the alternator as the weak spot first. A bigger battery won't help any if the stock piddly alternator can't keep up with it.

I didn't know the older boxes wouldn't fit a bigger battery... hopefully you could swap in a newer battery tray and be good to go.

The engine revs easier without that extra load, I noticed a big change when I cut the old belt off. And what do you mean not worth shit? It's good enough to charge the battery to start the car in cold weather.
