Coil Case Need To Be Grounded?

On an '87 GM, can you "temporarily" install the Ignition Coil with just the connector and spark plug wire and place the coil out of harm's way or does it HAVE to ground through the case and bracket. I am thinking of an emergency situation, late at night, with little light until I can get the car home. Present coil is good but just a question for a possible future issue!

doesnt matter since mines bolted to the plastic fender well.

should be fine, but you may get extra static in the radio. Run a ground wire from the bracket to something metal in the event it gives you any grief.

Wouldn't leave it unmounted for long - just for a short period as I said in case of an emergency. Thanks for the input!!

Is that why I have a ground wire on my ignition coil case on the inner fender? For radio static?

you mean the resistor thingy that comes out of the coil connector? I don't have that anymore either but i think so.. I've also heard it's to help prolong the life of the coil?
