Mk VIII Fan & Car Craft mag...

I picked a fan out of a MkVIII a few weeks ago. It has a 3 wire cn, but the harness turns to 2 wire (?).
I was wondering how to wire it up.
What amp fuse, What amp relay, what temp sensor etc...

The Nov. ish of C.C. has an article about it, they use aftermarket harnesses for it.

I have a Moroso elec water pump/fan on one of my cars, a digital Temp gauge/controller runs it through a relay. It has worked well for many years. I don't want a bunch of gauges in the CV CS.

I wonder how you guys have wired them up?

"Turns to 2 wire"? Figuring a wire is broken off inside the convulsive tubing.

The '90s Ford fans appear to work like this: one ground, two hots. I used a spare battery to identify the terminals, concluding that the correct ground made the fan run in the right direction.

Anyway, the smaller hot is for low speed, and for high speed you shut that off and energize the large hot. I have two relays running my Taurus fan, a 40A diode-protected as a SPST to switch it on and off and a 40/30A diode-protected as a SPDT to switch speeds (low to normally-closed, high to normally-open). Protection is a 40A fuse. I have a cheapie adjustable temp switch for on/off and currently have high speed wired to the A/C wiring. A better solution might be to use two temp switches, but I've also contemplated a simple logic circuit using either a transistor or a third relay that'd engage low for the temp switch OR the A/C, and high only when both the temp switch and A/C are on.

Some guys spring for the nice DCC (?) variable-speed controllers and wire that to the high-speed side only.

Ah, as in Boolean variables ...

Cool, looks like I remembered the name of the fancy controllers right: http://www.dccontrol.com/fancontrol.htm They have a two-speed controller, but I think it's the FK50 that I was told about. Supposedly the $150 gets you a much more reliable controller than the $100 models - and I see versions that control electric water pumps too.

Mark VIII fans are power whores. Don't be surprised if you start having issues with your electrical system with the Mark VIII fan.

Definitely don't get the fan from a 3.0L car, get one from a 3.8L car if picking from a Tortoise. I have a 3.0L fan, and it's really pretty small.

3.0 get one with two holes in the case on the raised ribs in the front. See pic.

That's the 130 amp 3g small case. That will work in place of the stock 2G alternator. If you have a 1G, you'll need one from a 3.8. Both will most likely need the bottom hole drilled out a little to allow the lower bolt to fit through.

How do you tell 1g from 2g?

Or more to the point does my 85 351 have a 1g?

Your 351 most likely has a 1G. The way to tell is whether or not the voltage regulator is on the back of the alt (2g) or mounted remotely (1G)
