    Cruise Control Removal

How exactly do I go about removing cruise control from an 85 vic? I know the servo is at the bottom of the steering column in the floor, but what else is needed besides the linkage on the throttle body? I want to put a Grant wheel on it, and I never use cruise control anyways; and it will be in my way when I do the 5-speed swap.

the servo is actually under the hood on the driver's side fender. If you want it to go away, just take the servo and it's cable out. If you want to get more involved with de-wiring it, the module is under the dash next to the ECM.

Oh, I thought the servo was the little plastic thing beside the computer. Thank you, I will do that. Will it also get rid of the hissing dash problem? Because I have been told before that that was the cruise control not having enough vacuum or something.

that hissing could be the brake release actuator or the horseshoe shaped vacuum switch on the end of the shifter shaft. Try plugging the line from the firewall to the horseshoe and see of the hissing stops. I had to do that with mine since I got the last actuator in the national dealer inventory about 1.5 years ago (and it died within 6 months).

I see no need to remove the cruise control just to diagnose a vacuum leak.

Also, p71towny reported being able to operate his cruise control via custom dash-mounted buttons after he went to an aftermarket wheel.

But, if you still want to get rid of the cruise, the canister thing with the redundant throttle wire attached is the main part of it. On my wagon, I also removed all the other associated wiring, as well as the speed sensor that mounts inline with the speedo gear.

You can still have the cruise with a manual transmission. And I saw a few people on here move the cruise buttons. Some used the original cruise buttons and just mounted them on the dash. Pretty neat actually.

I assume you had the correct (police/non speed sensor thing) attachment?

Okay, thanks guys. I don't have a need for cruise, and hopefully the vaccuum sound is the parking brake then. Cruise is just something else in my way.

I'd forgotten about that; the one that goes with the speed sensor has a quick-release clippy like the speedo end, doesn't it? As it turned out, I was replacing the speedo cable anyway since I wanted it to play nicely with an aftermarket speedometer.

Is the hiss still there when you disconnect and plug the big hose to the firewall vacuum tree?
