My drivers window is stuck in the down position and I can' figure out whats wrong. I removed the trim panel and replaced the switch with a spare I had and that didn't help. There is a faint clicking sound when I try to operate the switch, but nothing happens. After doing this several times it began to smoke.

i doubt if it will help (usually only works when there's a missing tooth on the gear) when you push upwards on the switch, punch the door panel as hard as you can.
it sounds like the bushings wore out if you could hear a clicking sound in the motor when pressing the button, but the window makes no move. our fearless leader scottmang did a video on just such a predicament, here you are sir
however the fact that it smoked makes me worry a bit...separate the wiring harness for the motor and make sure nothing is charred. i would be wondering if you didn't FUBAR the motor itself.sigpic

You will see three dimples on the door directly behind those three dimples will be the window motor. Drill out the three dimples big enough to get a socket in there..(7mm iirc?) and remove the three bolts for the window motor. Fish the window motor out through the speaker hole.~David~

Slam the fuck out of the door, that might free the window motor up enough that it will close.

Well I removed the motor and tested it when it was out of the door, and it worked just fine. I then decided to add more grease like in the video, fix it before it brakes. I reinstalled the motor, and with crossed fingers I pressed down on the switch (the window went up when I removed the motor) It worked, in fact it worked better than before, it used to skip about half way up so it is better than before. Plus I got the chance to rustproof the shit out of the inside of the door. So my assumption is that the gears were stuck in the middle or it was just jammed somewhere.
