My heat in my 1989 marq speeds up and slows down with engine load. The technician at my shop said it wad the alternator. So we replaced that and I'm not sure there was much improvement. I mean, it can be cranked all the way to maximum fan speed and its just not pushing air. Is there anything vacuum related that might be leaking or damaged that might be causing the issue ? Only when I floor it does it seem that the fan kicks up or the blower really spins. Before i sink more time and money into it, I'd like to see if anyone here has any thoughts. Thanks in advance.

original alternator? it's probably fine but getting weak. They were never that good to begin with. Time for a 3g conversion.

The blower on max speed pulls about 25 amps. If the charging system or the battery is weak you'll have it slow down at idle, but it really shouldn't change with engine load, just engine speed.
If you get air at idle, but it decreases or moves under load, that sounds like a vacuum problem. With a loss of vacuum, the system moves the air to the defrost vents.
If it sort of comes out everywhere all the time and doesn't change much when you move the sliders, then the air doors in the plenum are probably broken.86 Lincoln Town Car (Galactica).

Just put a new alternator in the car, so we can rule that out. In terms of vacuum, is it just a common engine vacuum leak or am I seeking some place specific? It has no problem relocating the heat between vent, floor, or window, so I think the doors are first e. Any chance it could be the motor itself or the blower resistor ?

two places specifically... the "soup can" on the driver inner fender (that's the vacuum reservoir for the vents) and all lines connected to it as well as the check valve that's on the other end of that vacuum line. If the can doesn't have rust/holes in it and the line is fine... it's probably the check valve. and that check valve should have a single port end going to the vacuum tree (thing with multiple hoses going everywhere almost dead center on the firewall) and two ports going to the reservoir and inside the cab to the controls. Both lines may dive into the cab though, so if you find that the line from the can goes to the firewall, just look for the 3-prong check valve behind the engine.
