    vacuum leak from rear?

So this is something that has been persistent since I bought the car over half a year ago, and I'm wondering if it matters. Obviously hasn't affected function: and I spent the summer fixing those things that were much more necessary.

But now I'd like to worry about it

Almost at random, I haven't yet made a connection between driving habits and when it manifests, I'll hear a quite audible hissing vacuum leak that seems to come from the rear of the car. But the acoustics could well be deceptive: just because it sounds like it's from the rear of the car, doesn't mean it's not simply reflecting off of the rear of the car and fooling the ears.

It's only when I'm backing out of the driveway and at low speeds, but that could simply be that highway noise drives it out.

What should I start to look at?

What you're hearing is probably the fuel pump. Open the trunk while its running and listen. I bet you'll hear the sound.

How was I to know? Whatever, I still think you're hearing the damn fuel pump. Open the TAILGATE. And get in there when it's running.

Fuel pump makes significant noise in wagon. Bothered my dad when the car was new. Had them replace pump under warranty. Noise never went away.

Turn the key on without starting the engine. Hear the same noise? It's the fuel pump.
