I remember reading something about it being hard to remove them with conventional sockets - Am I crazy or is there truth to that or what? Will I need any strange/modified socket to change em out?

i have a mastercraft 1'' deep socket/1/2 inch drive. it works well for removing these sensors. if you had a fox chasis car, you would have to remove the upper plenum to get to the ACT sensor i belive lol

I used an open ended wrench. Regular sockets can break off the ceramic part off of the sensor, basically rendering it useless. This is fine for removing old dud sensors, since they're being replaced anyway. Deep sockets or an open ended wrench.

I never have luck on the ECT. Freaking cheap metal on that one. I just destroy it trying to remove it. Removed it on three sets ups...one like stock, one like stock on 86 models and one like stock on a mustang. They were all a pain for me.~David~

I know they're on the lower intake but I can't visualize 'em. They're just right out in the open aren't they? Do you have pics of the different setups by any chance? Or just of the one on our cars.
Doesn't matter too much if I mangle it getting it out, but I'll be extra careful with teeny tiny turns of the wrench. I don't have a torque wrench.sigpic

From what I think I remember the act is on the drivers side...on the actual lower intake
ECT will be in a little extension pipe. The thing will be in the pipe horizontally. I dont have any pictures because they are pretty well buried items that you are looking to replace.~David~

1" deep socket works for me as well.
If the ECT is particularly crusty looking I usually remove the fitting, the sensor screws into, from the lower intake then put the fitting in a vise and remove the sensor.2003 Town Car Signature - 3.27 RAR, Dual exhaust and J-mod - SOLD 9/2011

I think I just used a wrench to hold the bung on the coolant pipe and a socket to remove the sensor. I don't remember any special trouble getting it out, and I know I didn't damage anything because I still use those pipes.86 Lincoln Town Car (Galactica).

the sensors came in the mail days ago, but it's been too rainy and shitty out to do anything electrical. as soon as i get a garage to borrow or it stops raining i'm going to try replacing the two sensors.....I hope I remember to do them one at a time so I don't put them in the wrong sides
slowly replacing every sensor I can because they're all original AFAIK. o2 sensors are nextLast edited by 1990LTD; 12-27-2010, 06:00 PM.sigpic

And as for the O2 sensors, why didn't you do those first? Those would definitely fuck up your mileage and possibly your rich condition.
