Anyone know how to disassemble Mark VI mirrors?

the driver side mirror rattles like crazy rolling down the road and I'd like to tighten up the internals on it, but I need to get the glass out of the way. They're heated too.

one screw goes up from the bottom, the other down from the top. I *think* you can get to the top one if you tilt the glass all the way down. The screw head is visible from that point at least. The manual says to shatter the glass and remove the screw behind the glass to get at the motor inside.

Last time I had this problem, one of the stabilizer rods had broken off the back of the mirror assembly. The actual piece the heater and glass attach to was broken. The only fix I could come up with was replacing the whole mirror. I have one that works if you don't mind putting a plug back on it, but the chrome looks like crap. I have an NOS one but the base is cracked near the mounting stud. It might work, but I wouldn't guarantee it won't break apart on you.

try tightening the screw from underneath. Pull the mirror off the door, and you can see one screw going up from the inside. I've found that the easiest way to get the mirrors off the door is to run the window up to remove the rear bolt, and use a long extension with a flexy joint to get at the front one. You can also remove the guide channels for the drop vent and flop it forward to get at the front nut.

it's the glass mount itself that wiggles... not the housing... unfortunately

It surprised me as well that my '80 Mark has that option. Always thought that was a late-model box towny thing.

there are actually 6 different mirrors available for those.
                heated/nonheated
                with/without thermometer
                manual / electric

There are 4 for the passenger side, none of them had a thermometer.

and any combination of those exist. If you want to get more picky about it, you can divide the power / heated mirrors into an early and late style. The only obvious difference is the plug, but the typeface on the thermometer is also very slightly different.

This will easily get it apart:

mines full option. thermometer, heated, power. And from the sounds of things, if the plastic plate the mirror is glued to is held in place by a screw in the center... then I'll have to get new glass at least to fix it. probably going to be a hella 'spensive NOS part too.
