How to swap the arm on power mirrors 85-91

This may also apply to other years.

First remove the mirror assembly from the door and the mirror head from the mounting arm.

Then... to get the wires out of the harness to be able to pull them out of the arm follow these pics...

Press in this slot to push the retaining clip out

pull the clip out of the harness.

lift the connector tabs to release the wires

I had to do this to use the original arm as it was a little more secure (less wobbly) than the replacement. I don't know why, everything looked about the same, but it just worked out that way. This is also handy for replacing the mirror head on any door (mounting a used driver side mirror on the passenger side to get rid of the "objects are closer than they appear" text or adding that wide view mirror to the driver side to help with the bugger huge blind spots).

Aaaahhhh so taking the pins out of the connector will let you pull the glass/motor out of the mirror housing?? i was confused for a minute.

no... this will allow you to take the support arm off of the head (case, mirror and all).

you have to somehow take the glass off the plastic backing to get at the screws that hold all that crap together inside the head. I haven't figured that out yet, otherwise I'd be working on the one on the driver side of my Mark VI.

all this does is allow you to swap the mirror head from side to side or replace a wobbly arm like in my case.

Just use a door panel removal tool to remove the glass in electric mirrors. They pop right out. Two guide studs and a metal cross hold everything together.

got a pic for where to pry?

looks like I'll finally have a reason to get that tool... my door panel removal tool has always been a flat head screwdriver.

You can get away with using a fork. Just wrap the fork with a rag. Just run the mirror to either extreme left or extreme right keep the tilt (up/down) at a minimum. Just gently pry with the fork on the short edge of the mirror and it will come up.

              Maybe this will help?
