Carburetor Choke Pull Off replacement help, 85 CFI

When it's cold, my car startes normally but slowly increases rpms until it's racing.

I was told the Carburetor Choke Pull Off was sticking and needed replaced (see pic).

Problem, I don't know how. I think it's the round thingie on the drivers side of the cfi, but it doesn't look openable. The internet hasn't been much help (but I might be looking in the wrong places).

Help! I'm afraid the old 302 is gonna blow....

If it was the choke pulloff, goosing the gas should do its job and release the choke. Take a look at it next time it does it to be sure that's what's holding the idle up.

Yes, if I goose the pedal it drops. The real issue I suppose is that it shouldn't be racing so hard. Maybe I just need an adjustment of sorts?

Have you tried turning the screw below the choke? It's on the passenger side below the choke. Turn it counter clockwise to turn down the choke cam. If that dosen't work, you can also turn down the choke thermostat... loosen the 3 screws(with the car off) and turn the round choke thermostat to the left... You might also want to check for vacumn leeks while your at it... Hope that helps

There is a high idle and a regular idle adjustment. The high idle may be up too high. Thats the one on the passenger side as mentioned above. It is supposed to idle high until you kick the throttle though. Just be careful backing that down too much or you may find it stalls in the cold or doesn't want to start. Its basically like a carb, the idle will wind itself up somewhat as the engine warms up, the fun part is finding a balance between being high enough to stay running when cold, and low enough that it doesn't sound like its gonna blow up.

typically I've seen carbs on 5.0s (Ford and Chevy both) usually have about 650 for idle and 850 for fast idle IIRC. Might be a good place to start at least.

As I tell my nephew, well I'll be a monkeys uncle

One of these days he'll get the right response to that lol.

With a longer flat screwdriver you don't even need to pull the air cleaner. 1/2 turn counter-clockwise and she's revving pretty.

                  Many many thanks!!
