engine bay tidying

I've given myself the task of tidying up the wiring and mess under my hood...I know some of you have insanely clean and organized engine compartments.

I was wondering if you could share any tips and perhaps pictures of your bays with a (as long as you want) description of what you've done to get rid of the underhood mess that the folks in st. thomas gave us at the factory. Anything else you've added or taken away under there.

also; what the hell kind of tape did they use on all of the wiring in there?

I simply rerouted most electrical things into an underhood fuse box mounted just behind the battery. This got rid of all the fusible links and spaghetti that is associated with them. The location was ideal because the starter solenoid is right there as well allowing one to easily distribute power to the box. Also helping with removing clutter was the installation of a 3g alternator accompanied by the removal of the old 2g wiring. Black wire convoluted tubing helps in maintaining some order as does black electrical tape as well as black zip ties.

The looming tape is basically non-adhesive electrical tape. Not sure where to buy it, but I really ought to find out. I have some wiring work that I need to do. Cheap electrical tape leaves a sticky residue and it oozes adhesive out from between the wraps over time.

Use F4 tape it is the best thing for it.

they had the loom at autozone last time I was at the local one. your local parts place may vary. home improvement stores may also have loads of it (re: home depot, lowes, ace hardware, etc)

I did the hole harness in my truck in convoluted tubing (black, as is the only color that should ever be used). Some of the harness was done from the factory, but I did the hole thing... just because. I hate seeing messy taped wires.

Loom you can buy at stores only lasts for a few years before it will crumble... some is better than others, but it all will eventually fall apart. You can buy the green stripe heat/oil resistant loom off ebay for cheaper than the crap costs from stores.

The later Towncar runs all it's wiring between the fender and the inner fender. If you remove that plastic inner liner where the fuse box lives, you find a big bundle of wires clipped over the wheel arch from the firewall out to the fuse box. Its effectively a factory wire tuck job.

I used braided split nylon loom on the Honda. It's good stuff very nice looking, flexible, and tough. You can get a assortment kit on jegs for like $120 I did thw whole honda with 1 kit and have some left over. The same kit with regular convoluted tubing is only $20 but I think it's worth the extra $100 cause the braided stuff just looks so much better.

I can't wait till I get a chance to do a wire tuck on the Marquis.
