Well, son-of-a-bitch. I got the motor meshed up with the regulator, and the thing goes up and down nicely, but, you guessed it, the window doesn't move at all. My original guess that someone had been in the door before was proven to be correct - firstly, the regulator slide-thingy had been taken out of the channel guide/bracket that is riveted to the window, and secondly there is a clamp attached to the same bracket holding the window up!

So now I have to figure out how to engage the regulator slide into the channel - please don't tell me I have to disassemble everything.

old style. never worked on a car with the newer type motor. I have no idea how those come apart.

Can you get pics of where the parts are inside the door? I've put mine back together before but without knowing what they did, its hard to advise. I'm gonna go out on a limb and say you most likely do not need to take everything apart again though.

Final update - I hope! Had to unbolt the vertical bar that guides the window, remove it and this allowed me to move the glass and channel assembly until it could be in a position to accept the regulator slide-thingy. I make it sound easy, but it wasn't - this is the first time I've done anything like this. Cleaned the glass, greased the slider and bar, and antthing else that looked like it needed it, and watched with amazement as the freaking window finally worked.

Whoever the S.O.B. was who cocked the thing up in the first place was, well I believe in karma. Why leave the regulator unhooked from the window?
