    5 digit odometer?!?

    Hi!

I keep on forgetting to ask: why oh why does the grand marquis only have a 5 digit odometer? Given the condition of my car, I expect it's 115,000 miles: but who can say?
Why didn't they have 6 digits, like most cars?

because back in the day 5 digits is all the car was expected to last so they were always done with 5 digits till the 80s sometime. hehe i remember my first wife pulled over and called me on the payphone, she was panicking saying what am i supposed to do the odometer just went to 5 zeros. she thought the car was gonna stop working.

Oh noes! Y2K bug for cars!!! My father's company made a fair bit of business on that scam....

But my car is from 1990! Did they really only expect 100,000 miles? :-(

No, but it was going to change in a few years so they didn't worry about it. Old school was you traded the car before it it 100,000. Resale dropped to nothing after that.

I have a 1992 Olds Custom cruiser wagon(1992 was the last year of a RWD, V8 car for Olds). The speedometer works, but the odometer & the trip odometer sometimes turn over, but usually freeze up.What would cause this?Do I need to replace my whole speedometer cluster or just a gear???

the odometer gear is probably missing a tooth. you'll have to take the thing apart to find out which gear you need though. #1 rule is don't mess with the speedometer needle if you don't have to. The speedo is sometimes difficult to take apart, but with patience, it can be done.

The 6 digit odometer will work and look factory installed on any older 5 digit odometer, it's as simple as taking out the old and replacing it. Same look, same screws, same everything!!! It doesn't look like it will work but it does and looks perfect. How do I know?
I did this on my 5 digit odometer 91 CV 3 months ago. It's an incredibly simple swap!!
