    Let's do the click

Ok, this is what I've been going through for the past week.

I got a 87gm, when I go to start the starter relay on the fender clicks once per crank attempt. The relay is about 2 weeks old, JUST got it. I cleaned the battery cable connections that bolt to the starter and the relay, and she fired slow. I got a satisfactory 2-3 cranks, not at the same time, then she resorts back to clicking.

I got a little curious and ran a jumper cable from the outlet of the relay to the starter, and she fired. At this, I replaced that battery cable. I gotten about 5 cranks and now back to click.

So, I done some shotgun trouble shooting; I did a load test on the battery and took the starter to autozone to get it checked out. Both are good. Also, the grounds are good. Now, she refuses to start even with the jumper cable trick.

I have the possibility that this car just likes to eat starter relays, this would be the third one since I got her running back in December. So, any ideas?

No car just eats relays there has to be something wrong with it. Check your cable for resistance it might be time for some new cables.

starter may be ok on the tester, but drawing too much power thru the soleniod and frying them......then add the cheap materials the chinese used....they are total pieces of crap, i either order motorcraft soleniods, or harvest oem ones from the junkyard, use the aftermarket ones in a pinch, but i've seen many fail

smack the starter with a hammer and see if it goes. If it does, replace the starter. When they start eating relays, its usually the starter beginning to fail and pulling excessive current.

The starter was bought in April this year, I decided to double check it since it was apart of the circuit. The starter was tested twice, the starter is fine.

Currently, there is nothing going to the starter, getting no crank at all.

go check the wires just because they are new doesnt mean anything if your not getting power to the starter obviously there is a problem in the supply along the line somewhere.

I'd be willing to bet the only test the starter is getting is "does it turn?" when voltage applied? Ask them how many amps it drew. If they can't tell you that, they are doing the "does it turn?". If they say its "in the green" thats meaningless.

Get a dmm, hook one lead to the output of the starter relay. Hook the other lead to the starter end of the cable. Try and start it. How many volts to you read? If you read any, your cable is bad.

                Alex.
