probably because the switch is dying and close to setting your car on fire. Replace it.

I get hot-key syndrome occasionally in all my fords. This has more to do with the Texas sun beating down on the steering column than the ignition switch. The only switch I have issues with is the one in the vic... and that's due to the key helper being broken and flops back and forth about 1/8th turn (the part that assists in turning the key... the giant wingnut part).

I replaced the ignition on my car a few months ago. Some repair place wanted 300 bucks to fix the damn thing. My brother and I ended up replacing it our selves, 30 dollars and 3 hours later...

figured I'd mention that just for a sanity check. My keys are generally hot in the summer and normal the rest of the year. Sun makes a good heater in the summer. Don't feel like an idiot though, that's not an observation I've seen a lot of people make. Took me a long time to figure that one out myself.

You realize the ignition switch is mounted farther down on the steering column and is separate from the lock cylinder, where you insert the ignition key.

If the lock cylinder is hot, its most likely from the sun or some other source.

However, I will agree with Scott. the ignition switches are notorious on these vehicles for failing and/or causing fires. replacing it is cheap insurance.

Are the (lots) more expensive switches for other vehicle models actually supposed to that much safer and more reliable?

I think its just specific to the 80s Ford switches. It was supposedly redesigned in 1990, though the switch looks the same to me. I don't know what the revision exactly does, but apparently it doesn't allow the contact block to fall out, or the switch contact points to melt away like the originals do.
