Ok I went outside to start my car (88 grand marquis) this morning, when it started it sounded like it was at a higher idle then normal. I turned it off and when I did either the starter or alternator was still going. The engine wasnt firing it was just spinning. So I disconnected the battery. Can someone please help me out.

Starter solenoid on the p.side fender. The relays inside are stuck closed and the battery is giving juice to the starter even after the car caught fire. You can try smacking the starter solenoid but in most cases (if this is in fact the problem) you need to replace it.
With the battery still disconnected take a multimeter and check for continuity between the two big posts on the solenoid. If you have continuity the solenoid is your problem.~David~

my car starts and it has AC. Yours doesn't start and it has no AC. Seems obvious to me.

It'll happen again. The hammer is just a temporary fix. What happened is the contacts inside the solenoid welded themselves together, and you managed to break them apart. I would replace the part. Rockauto has Motorcraft ones listed for $20.Originally posted by gadget73There is nothing more permanent than a temporary fix.

Replace the relay. If the replacement relay fails in a few weeks, replace the starter. The relays do just wear out eventually, but when they fail in a short amount of time, its almost always because the starter is dying and pulling too much current.86 Lincoln Town Car (Galactica).

Yes what Thain said. I experienced this first hand! Mid 2007 9pm walking to the parking lot with my cousin wanting to go home from work from the U.S. open. Turn key and the relay sticks....kiles battery FUCK. Charge battery and smack solenoid to get home. replace solenoid and same thing happens in a few days. Finally replace starter and all was well.~David~

Just the solenoid. And if it happens again then replace the starter with a newer starter. http://www.grandmarq.net/vb/showthread.php?t=30250~David~
