There are no lock functions. It's only given me "trouble" once, and since then it's been fine. I had figured something got really wet under the hood and caused the problem because what happened is completely different from anything my remote starter unit does, and because it started happening when I was spraying the car at the self-wash bays. I drove it for 20 minutes, parked it, and when I came out a couple of hours later it never happened again.

I will get under the dash when I have the time the day after tomorrow. Thanks.

Scotch locks? Are those wire connections?

oh, apparently scotch locks are those quick splice things. nuts to those.

I assume you had non-functional lock functions.

You have an aftermarket remote start.
Usually they have keyless entry by defualt.
You mention the remotes have the buttons for keyless.
      You mention funky light action.
Aftermarket keyless/remote started tie into the parking lights for that flash function.
If they are wired poorly Fred pokes in his head.
Funky action while washing the car tells me Fred is in your car.
Which reminds me, check the wiring harness by the drivers & passenger side parking light, and look for those quick splice things. See if any are further up the engine bay. You never know where somebody decided to put one of them things.

I guess it's a good idea to go through and get rid of all of those little bastards? Soldering or using better connectors to rejoin the wires of course. I'd imagine a lot of the wire under there is pretty crispy after 20 years.

and sorry, that is what I meant. Non-functional lock functions. You are correct. It will blink when I hit the unlock/lock buttons but the blinking is faster and the pattern is different than when Fred showed up. He only showed up that one time. I'll find the motherfucker yet.

thanks for your help man - i'm sorry my previous post reads a bit on the unappreciative side of things.

The wires will be fine unless they've been exposed to lots of heat or sunlight. PVC insulation is surprisingly durable barring heat and radiation (UV, nuclear, etc) damage.

well, in that case you'll die before you have to worry about the starting system anyway so its cool.

We had to stop using PVC insulated wire in the radiation cell at work. In about 12 months time, it would go from brand new to having insulation that looked like it had been blasted with a torch. It would crumble off as dark brown dust. The effects of gamma radiation are pretty similar to the effects of heat in a lot of cases.
