Mine hisses slightly when I switch from reverse to drive as well. Always has, and as soon as you get it in gear it quits. I think it's the vacuum motor engaging to release the brake, because it sure doesn't sound like a leak to me.91 Mercury CP, Lopo 302, AOD, 3.08LSD. 3g upgrade, Moog wagon coils up front, cc819s in the back. the system is pretty basic. You have a vacuum line that runs from the tree to the valve, then from the valve to the vacuum motor. If the vacuum lines or the vacuum motor is bad, it won't release. I also want to say there is a bit of wiggle room where that valve mounts, so if its not adjusted properly it won't operate. There also ought to be a tang or something that it engages on the shift lever shaft to move the valve internals. if thats not set in the valve where it belongs, it won't work.86 Lincoln Town Car (Galactica).

ok i have a new problem the parking brake releases fine. But i cant apply my Parking brake in park without having the car shut off. I pulled the hose from the servo and there is air suction all the time while the car is running, whats the problem.

check for shorts from the e-brake assembly against the ditch light harness. my 88 liked to blow the fuses to hell before I found that when my e-brake was on. if it shorts just right, it may kill all kinds of crap.

bah... I read that first post totally wrong. It's that little horseshoe shaped thing (part that gadget is talking about) near the firewall. somehow it's either come free from the shifter shaft, not installed properly as stated, or the brake release is plumbed directly to the vacuum source. There should be no vacuum passed from Park to Neutral. It should only apply vacuum to the brake release in Drive settings.
